What's Going On in Low Voltage Technology?

What are students learning in our Low Voltage Technology program? What motivates them to train in this field? Let's find out!

Eric Rojas, Low Voltage Technology student

"Fiber optics are little glass strands, smaller than a human hair, that carry data signals much like your standard ethernet wire. But instead of using electricity, are using light. So because it's light, it can move incredibly fast and it has basically unlimited bandwidth."

Demark Daley, Low Voltage Technology student

"Today we were basically just stripping some of the fiber wire and getting ready for it to be terminated. We have to strip the wire, we have to polish it, we have to fit the connector. So that's pretty much what we were doing today."

Troy Clark, Low Voltage Technology instructor

"It's evolving into the field that's for the future. No longer is copper cabling going to fit our needs. We're going to need fiber optics. It seems to be more jobs are done at home which requires more data speed."

Eric Rojas, Low Voltage Technology student

"It is sort of like something you hear about, like I've heard of, you know, the big thing now is "fiber to the home" and you can get really fast internet and everything. But that's not even half of it. Things that you can do with low voltage are just so diverse-you've got your fire alarms, you've got security systems, CCTV, all your internet is low voltage-and that's sort of my alley. I've always built my own computers since I was young. It's just like interesting to me, terminating my own ends, and actually knowing how that all works. And being able to do it myself is also like a really nice perk because I find it really useful."

Demark Daley, Low Voltage Technology student

"Advice I would give someone will be just to show up. Showing up is like 80 percent of the job. If you're not there you're not going to be able to learn. You're not going to be able to get used to the movements. You're not going to understand the terminology. So I would say just show up, be prepared, and put a good foot forward."
